Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether PQ4R (Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite, Review) method can increase elementary student learning achievement, especially on Civics subject for the fifth grade students. PQ4R method was developed by Thomas and Robinson. PQ4R method is a learning strategy that consists of six stages. Those are Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite and Review. This method facilitates students in memorizing and recalling information when it is needed. The hypothesis of this research is PQ4R method may increase the learning achievement of students on Civics subject, in which the achievement of experimental group is higher than control group. This research used experimental method. The subject of the research were the fifth grade elementary students of A and B class with thirteen students as sample for each class. The instrument to measure learning achievement was summative test. The materials for test were taken from Civics subject on Appreciate Collective Decision chapter.  The data analysis technique was  Mann-Whitney U test. The result of this research showed that the learning achievement of experimental group was higher than control group with U value =  0,000 with p < 0,01. It can be concluded that PQ4R method can increase the learning achievement of the fifth grade elementary student on Civics subject. Key words : PQ4R method, Civics subject,  learning achievement
